A Fiery Relationship

Dan Anderson and his wife Caroline Bottom Anderson have a fiery relationship. That's just the nature of their work.

From the home studio in Edwardsville, Dan Anderson fires ceramic pieces that hearken back to an earlier era. By crafting in clay meticulous replicas of beat-up metal oil cans, Dan confounds time, meshing industrial progress with an almost archaeological aesthetic. Meanwhile, a few yards away in her own studio, Caroline molds glass into fluid, organic shapes... like tubular flowers frozen in bloom or sea anemone swaying in an ocean current. Their work is strikingly different, which may explain why they stay out of each other's way when the creative energy starts flowing. Yet the couple's work is similar in that it takes its inspiration from the timeless forest that surrounds their Old Poag Road Clay and Glass studio.
