Rhythm of Iberia

Dame Libby Komaiko's Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theatre brings Old World passion to the Midwest.

The ensemble's innovative Spanish ballets, traditional folkloric suites and fiery Flamenco dramas from the medieval days through the 21st Century give spectators quick insight into the cultural crossroads that is Spain.

Komaiko founded the company in 1976, just two years after she began teaching dance at Northeastern Illinois University. In recognition of her work promoting Spanish culture, King Juan Carlos I of Spain awarded her the Lazo de Dama de Orden de Isabel la Católica – "Ribbon of the Dame" – Spain's highest honor, in 1983.

The company of forty dancers includes not only dedicated locals who share Komaiko's love for Spanish dance and music but also former dancers from Spain's National Ballet as well as accomplished Flamenco musicians. Photos by Joe Davis.
