Whatever you do, don't call it a suburb. Like a big city in a little package, Evanston mixes cosmopolitan attractions with small town charm – and a booming art scene to boot.

Evanston's hodge-podge of cultures, classes and creeds has long made it a welcoming place for people from all walks of life. A number of artists have been drawn to the town, creating an eclectic mix of work.

Locals are never afraid to try new things – when residents weren't busy founding the Illinois Republican Party or the Women's Christian Temperance Union, they were inventing Tinkertoys and, allegedly, ice cream sundaes.

The city's art is just as daring, with innovators like Annette Barbier pioneering the storytelling ability of video and computer art, while Mark Arctander creates whimsical sculptures by placing otherwise normal objects in new environments.
