Modern Movements
Mime's not dead. Just ask Lisa Fay and Jeff Glassman.
The Urbana-Champaign theatrical duo have long incorporated non-verbal forms of communication in their experimental theatre
pieces. With "Coffee Cup Duet," a send-up of hypocrisy and irony in business meetings, Fay and Glassman continue the practice,
utilizing bold choreography to portray their point.
The artists borrow heavily from a variety of theatre traditions. Glassman studied not only mime but also the Japanese theatre
of Kabuki. Fay, who heads up the Inner Voices Social Issues Theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has
taught courses on "movement theatre" which emphasizes choreography over text.
