Jailhouse Rock

At the Ft. Sheridan stockade in Highwood, the most important bars are on paper.

That's because for years this old army prison has been home to the Midwest Young Artists and its sizable retinue of choral and instrumental groups.

Built in 1890 just a few hundred yards from the shores of Lake Michigan and closed a century later, the stockade was handed over to the Midwest Young Artists in 1994. The group moved into the building in 2000 after a thorough renovation.

From their new home, the MYA has continued to grow. Already considered the largest youth ensemble music program in the Midwest, the past few years have seen the organization's reputation blossom. Most recently, the MYA was chosen as the youth orchestra of the year in 2003 and chamber ensemble of the year in 2005 by the Illinois Council of Orchestras.
