Paper Trail

Why just read a book when you can make your own at the Center for Book and Paper Arts?

At the Center for Book and Paper Arts paper aficionados get to take their passion for the printed page as far as they want. By making paper, setting and printing type, sewing pages and binding covers, students get a hands-on lesson in this two-thousand-year-old craft.

Founded in 1994, the center introduces novices to the art of papermaking and bookbinding in day-long to month-long classes. In collaboration with Columbia College, the center also lets veterans perfect their skills through a Master of Fine Arts program.

Students make traditional books and experiment with innovative ways of using this age-old medium. And once in a while, the center likes to get really crazy, like when it puts on the annual Edible Books Festival.
