Feel the Beat
At DanceAfrica Chicago, the grooves are infectious.
Since 1991, the multi-day
DanceAfrica festival has been bringing old and new dance styles to the Chicago stage for the largest festival of African and African-American
arts in the country. Traditional Ugandan dance troupes mix with contemporary hip hop acts, uniting generations with the pulsing,
percussive rhythms.
Hypnotized by the rumbling drums and exuberant costumes, the crowds have a hard time staying in their seats. But thanks to
in-school and community presentations, members of the public have a chance to join in, jump on the dance floor and strut their
stuff.
DanceAfrica sponsors more than 100
events throughout the year. These lectures, workshops and classes help audiences in Chicago and beyond celebrate traditional and
contemporary music and dance inspired by African cultures.
