Toying with Tradition

From a small bowling alley in Evanston to the international stage, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago puts a spin on tradition as the world's oldest American jazz dance company.

In 1962 choreographer Gus Giordano opened up a dance studio in a bowling alley in Evanston and in the more than 40 years since the company has become a world-renowned dance company. Dedicated to the preservation and development of American jazz dance, the company's mission is to bring greater visibility to this indigenous American art form.

Energetic, acrobatic and provocative, the group's repertoire often takes the traditional and turns it into something much more. The company's enthusiasm expands to their active involvement in the city of Chicago where they can often be found performing at local schools, teaching at universities, or working with the Chicago Park District in an effort to promote this ever-developing art form.
