The Art of Science

If you think art and science live at opposite ends of the spectrum, you haven't been to Chicago's International Museum of Surgical Science.

Opened in 1954 at a lakeside mansion on the North Side, the museum houses a vast collection of surgical equipment that traces the history of medicine up to the modern day. In addition to its display of historical paintings depicting surgical theatres and allegories on medicine, the museum also hosts artists whose striking works remind visitors of the very human side of surgery.

See what artists have shown their work at the museum's "Anatomy in the Gallery" art space and find out how you can display your work at the museum. All images courtesy of the International Museum of Surgical Science.
