The War: A Ken Burns Film

WTTW presents THE WAR: A KEN BURNS FILM

This monumental new seven-part documentary series, directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The seven-part series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history – a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America – and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives.

THE WAR, directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, is a production of Florentine Films and WETA-TV.

WTTW presents CHICAGO'S WWII HEROES

THE WAR presented a very special and very unique opportunity to us to help tell the stories, many of them untold until now, of the veterans in our own community. And so on four of our broadcast platforms during the months of September and October – WTTW11, WTTWD, 98.7WFMT, and wttw.com – we will share war stories like that of Donald Casey's. Casey is an 82-year-old native Chicagoan, a veteran of World War II, and a survivor of the German POW Camp, Stalag VII-A in Moosburg, Germany near Munich. He flew 28 bombing missions with the 8th Air Force over Europe until June 18, 1944 when his B-17 was shot down and he was captured by the Germans. He shares his story of surviving the death march westward in January 1945, ending up at Stalag, and finally being liberated by General Patton's 3rd Army. Casey remembers, "I saw him at close range as he rode into our camp standing up in his Jeep. He spoke briefly to our ragged formation."
