Parks and their History

Both Washington Park and Jackson Park to the east were laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, best known as the designers of New York’s Central Park. But when Olmsted first visited the site for these parks, he was not impressed. He described it as “extremely bleak” and decried the “absence of sublime or picturesque elevations of land”. However, Lake Michigan caught his eye and he took full advantage of the lake in his design for these parks.
