Coded Bias: A WTTW Screening & Community Conversation

Join WTTW for CODED BIAS, a new film from Independent Lens. When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies fail more often on darker-skinned faces or the faces of women than others, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in the technology that shapes our lives.
After the screening, Sylvia Ewing will moderate a virtual conversation with community and thought leaders. Sylvia will be joined by Ruha Benjamin, Ph.D. (Princeton University Professor, African American Studies and Director, Ida B. Wells JUST Data Lab); Leah Castleberry (Founder & Chief Strategist, LYC Strategies, LLC); Dr. Fallon Wilson (Lead Principal Investigator and Co-Founder, #BlackTechFutures Research Institute); and Carl Hertz (Director, Information Technology at Elevate).The panel will discuss the underlying biases in AI technology that shape our lives and threaten our democracy as well as practical steps that can be taken to address these biases.
