Picnic Patrol | Activities | WTTW Kids Learn & Play

Understanding letter sounds is a foundational skill of reading. Students will practice identifying words that begin with the same letter in this fun game.

Activity Prep

  1. Before the activity, have pictures of different types of food printed or cut out of magazines. Hang them on a sturdy white board or bulletin board for the game.
  2. A scorekeeper is useful (if there is another adult available); use the timer to play the game.

Activity

  1. Show children the Sesame Street “Picnic Patrol” video for the letter “C.” Then tell them they will watch two more videos. Invite children to stand up, march in place, and chant with the ant general for the “Picnic Patrol” videos for “Z” and “P.”
  2. Afterward, tell children to line up in two lines as you count them off by 1-2. Tell them that they will take turns using one of the flyswatters to swat a picture of a food that begins with the sound you will read.
  3. After each child has taken a turn, tell them to go to the end of the line for their next turn.
  4. The first team to reach a predetermined number of correct answers OR the team with the most correct hits in a given time wins.

Considerations/Modifications/Extension Activities

  1. For children that need additional assistance, have the name of the food printed under each photo.
