Simon Says | Activities | WTTW Kids Learn & Play

Children will be using the classic Simon Says game in conjunction with the fun of Sesame Street to practice skills in listening and following direction.

Activity Prep

  1. Before the children arrive, come up with commands you can use with the children during the game. This will save time and reduce the likelihood that the children will lose interest in the middle of the game.

Activity

  1. Explain to the children that they are going to learn how to play a game called “Simon Says” and that characters from Sesame Street are going to teach them how to play. Play video from 8:00-9:12.
  2. Then tell children that they can play along where they are. (Play the video from 9:12-11:40)
  3. Next, tell the children that the group will play “Simon Says.” When each child does something when they should not, they should sit down until a winner is crowned. Remind them to use their eyes and ears to see and hear the commands.
  4. The winner will receive a “Simon Says Champion” crown. Review with the children that “Simon Says” is not just a game and that it helps them practice their listening and watching skills, which will help them learn new things and become a better friend and family member.

Considerations/Modifications/Extension Activities

  1. The entire “Simon Says” video clip is pertinent and may be shown for this activity, but the selected clips are the only ones that are necessary.
  2. Having other adults look for and call out children that should sit down during the game will help the game move smoothly.
  3. For children that need additional assistance, playing a practice game or two can help children gain confidence.
