Unveiled in 1984, French sculptor Jean Dubuffet’s Monument with Standing Beast dominates the plaza outside the James R. Thompson Center. This boldly graphic fiberglass sculpture is 29 feet high and weighs more than 10 tons.

Monument with Standing Beast is one of hundreds of works of art in the State of Illinois collection, funded by a half-percent earmark from all state building construction projects. Many more State-owned works are on display inside the building.
