WTTW Is Bringing Chicago's Summertime Activities To Your Home

Summer in Chicago is typically full of engaging activities held in the parks of the ciy, activities prevented this year by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the cancellation or re-imagination of everything from the Taste of Chicago to the Grant Park Music Festival. To make up for some of those losses, WTTW is partnering with the Chicago Park District and Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to bring you modified versions of some of Chicago's favorite summer traditions. 

"We're excited to partner with the Park District and Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to bring some beloved summer activities to Chicagoans in their home," says Lisa Tipton, WTTW's Head of Programming and Pledge. 

Here are some of this year's special programs. 

SummerDance in Place

Wednesdays at 5:30 pm on WTTW Prime beginning July 8

In normal years, Chicagoans can gather for a quick lesson in a dance style before trying out their new steps to live dance during SummerDance. SummerDance in Place brings the experience to you. Find a place in your living room, on your balcony, in your bedroom, or on the sidewalk in front of your home and get a 30-minute lesson before showing off your moves to an hour of music in the same style. July 8 features Bollywood and Bhangra, July 15 focuses on swing, July 22 takes on cumbia, and July 29 is line dancing. 

A Night Out in the Parks at Home

Fridays at 5:30 pm on WTTW beginning July 31

While you can't gather to watch movies or concerts in Chicago's parks this year, the Park District is putting together some artistic performances for you to enjoy at home on Friday evenings, the perfect way to start off your weekend!

Camp TV

Monday through Thursday at 5:00 pm on WTTW, beginning August 3

Day camps may not be operating as usual or at all this summer, but Camp TV can offer a similar experience at home to elementary school children. The new, hour-long daily series will combine playful camp activities and education, and include local segments produced in conjunction with the Chicago Park District.
