There's a huge amount of worthwhile TV out there nowadays, so it can be hard to choose what to watch. But who better to recommend shows than the person who programs them? Lisa Tipton, WTTW’s Head of Programming and Pledge, constructs the WTTW schedule by searching through offerings from many different sources which include the national PBS network, the BBC, and independent filmmakers to put together a varied and engaging broadcast schedule. Each month, she’ll recommend a few shows that she thinks you should watch.

For the Left Hand
Norman Malone has loved music his whole life, but he only makes his orchestral debut performing a devilishly hard piano concerto at the age of 79. As if that weren't difficult enough, Norman also can only play with his left hand, having suffered an injury at the hands of his father as a child. This documentary from local studio Kartemquin is a portrait of a remarkable man and a demonstration of the power of music.

Independent Lens — Home from School: The Children of Carlisle

November is Native American Heritage Month, which means both celebrating the living experiences of contemporary Native Americans and recognizing the brutal history of dispossession against this country's first residents. This documentary does both, as it tells the story of Northern Arapaho tribal members traveling from Wyoming to Pennsylvania to recover the remains of three boys who died at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which sought to "kill the Indian" in its students.
