Illinois has over 27 million acres of farmland, which amounts to about three-quarters of the Prairie State’s land area. In and around Chicago, there are plenty of options for buying fresh produce, meat, eggs, and more from local farmers. Community-supported agriculture (CSA) has become an increasingly popular way to do that.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CSAs (also sometimes called “farm shares”) are made up of “a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm.”

Here’s how it works: the consumer pays the farmer a sum of money, and each week or month, that consumer gets a share of the farmer’s product. The share of those goods come in a box or bag, either delivered to your door or picked up at a designated spot.

Different CSAs offer different things. Produce, including fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs, are the most common. Other farms offer fresh meat, eggs, and other pantry must-haves, such as honey, or even flowers. For that reason, the prices vary widely. Some ask you to make one large payment up front for the entire season, while others offer payment plans. Some CSAs accept EBT, too.

Some CSAs may now be at-capacity since we first compiled this list, so always check with the producer first for availability, pricing, and delivery options.

Angelic Organics

Green Earth Harvest

Pick-up or Delivery: Pick-up on the farm in Naperville or at host sites in Lisle, Lombard, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, and Winfield. Some local delivery available.
Frequency: Weekly, bi-weekly, or "Sampler Share" (five drop-in visits) from May through November
Cost: $153–$1,000 depending on size of share, location, and frequency. Thursday farmstands from July to October offer per item purchases.

Growing Solutions Farm
