Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker David Grubin, son of a general practitioner, focuses his cameras on New York’s Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine to highlight its innovative approach to medical education. The film follows Hofstra’s first-year medical students as they head into the field, train as emergency medical technicians, and confront simulated disasters alongside New York City firemen. These young doctors go through a program where they learn that while mastering the science of medicine is vital, the human dimension – trust, empathy, and the importance of a doctor’s or caregiver’s “bedside manner” – is crucial in medical care and successful outcomes for patients.
