Horizontal Lines

In the spirit of America’s wide-open spaces, the Robie House’s lines broke away from the peaked roofs of the past and embraced its horizontality – even flatness.

Eaves

Large eaves emphasized the bold, horizontal rooflines (and shaded the many windows Wright included).

Ribbons of Windows

Before the Robie House, windows were more like holes punched in a home’s walls. Wright’s innovative design placed the windows in continuous ribbons running along the eaves, expressing his idea that indoor and outdoor spaces should be in unity.
