Choreographed,. Described as “a coming of age story for the Twitter generation,” the work allows the audience to meet Junior only through his confessional text messages, projected on a screen by Roussève’s longtime collaborator Cari Ann Shim Sham, amidst glorious and pain-wrenching dance from African-American choreographer Roussève’s 10-person company REALITY. The sound score juxtaposes the intimate romanticism of Nat King Cole standards with the rough-edged, hip-hop-inflected original music of d. Sabela written and directed by Roussève, Stardust relates the travails of Junior, a gay disenfranchised African-American teenager Grimes. Roussève’s lush choreography is leavened by frenetic, angular representations of the protagonist’s anxious states of mind.
