While you may not recognize the face, you're probably well-acquainted with
her work. As the Commissioner of Chicago's Department
of Cultural Affairs, Lois Weisberg has launched the Chicago
Cultural Center, created Gallery
37, and brought Chicago the incredibly popular Cows
on Parade exhibit. Such attractions may sound bizarre to the outsider,
but don't be surprised, anything is possible in the world of Lois
Weisberg.
Long before her career in city government, she started a drama troupe,
published an underground
newspaper, founded Friends of the Parks, ran the Chicago
Council of Lawyers, and managed multiple political campaigns. Her numerous
careers and magnetic personality have resulted in an intricate web of friends
and acquaintances, inspiring a recent New Yorker article titled "Six
Degrees of Lois Weisberg".
In this episode of Chicago Stories, our cameras follow Lois on
a day at the office. Then John Callaway goes one-on-one with Lois, exploring
everything from her childhood in Chicago's Austin neighborhood to her current
role as Chicago's "Queen of Culture".
