Like the Sherman House, the Palmer House Hotel kept coming back, better than before. But at least its story ends more happily, with the current Palmer House Hilton still standing, as opulent and occupied as ever.

The building shown here was constructed as the world’s first “fireproof hotel” to replace the Palmer House lost in the Great Fire of 1871. It may have been fireproof, but it was not demolition proof; it was demolished and replaced by the current Palmer House Hotel in the 1920s.
