Helen moves home to help on the family farm but her father wants to coddle her as she's pregnant. Mrs. Hall and Siegfried wrestle with an impending departure. 

Eliza sets to helping a friend – and saving her business – when Nash becomes wanted in connection with a murder. 

Barbara is suspended from her show and forced to stay at home out of sight of the press. The team tries to keep producing the show without her, to their dismay. 

James finally has to leave for the air force, and set about preparing Skeldale for his absence and reckoning with leaving Helen and their coming child behind.

Eliza and Nash continue to clash in their approaches to running the business while they investigate an explosion at a newfangled telephone company.

Barbara and Diane both continue to find more success, although perhaps their news isn't as good as they like. And Barbara endangers her career by accident, thanks to her relationship with Clive. 

As Richard frustrates James by simultaneously being a know-it-all and clueless, James worries that he has endangered Helen and their unborn child. 

William convalesces at Eliza's house as she tries to solve a robbery with Nash, lest their gangster client be unhappy with their work.

Barbara's career begins to take off as her father suffers from ill health. She finds a friend in a journalist and a lover in a member of the team working on her sitcom.

James acquires a student assistant in order to spend some more time with Helen, but things don't quite work out as Mrs. Pumphrey's community tea party approaches. 

Eliza reflects on the first time she met William, when both of them were a teenager and she had just been expelled from school. 

Barbara gets an opportunity to be in a sitcom, but first has to convince people to let her as she tries to make it big.

Skeldale House is a mess, leading Siegfried to hire a bookkeeper to put things in order. But she quickly changes the way the business is run, to everyone's chagrin.
