Flying Flapjacks

Flying Flapjacks? You bet! These flapjacks may not actually fly on their own, but they’re definitely going to soar to the top of your child’s list of favorite activities (and meals). This easy and fun recipe is a perfect introduction to measuring, mixing, and pouring to help your child gain confidence in their kitchen skills. It’s also a great chance to show someone they care by mixing up a batch of Flying Flapjacks for a friend or loved one.

When Donkey Hodie tries and tries to make a special batch of Flying Flapjacks, her first attempts don’t go exactly as planned. She decides to ask her pals for help. Invite your child to make Flying Flapjacks and let your child take the lead. Talk with them about parts of the recipe that seem easy or hard to them. Let them know that you’re available to help if they need you. While you’re working together, talk about how you’re going to make the flapjacks “fly!”

As you enjoy some Flying Flapjacks with your child, ask them what it was like to make them. Did they enjoy taking the lead? Which parts could they do by themselves? Which parts did they need to ask for help? Ask them what kind of recipe they might like to try next!

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Cooking spray
Blueberries (optional)

Directions

1. In a large bowl, measure and mix the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt.

2. Make a hole in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the milk, egg, and oil. Mix until smooth. If you’d like blueberries in your Flying Flapjacks, add a few to the batter now.

3. Lightly spray a pan or griddle over medium heat with the cooking spray. Pour or scoop the batter onto the pan, using about 1/4 cup of batter for each flapjack.

4. Cook each flapjack until they are light brown on both sides. Remove them from the pan and place them on a plate.
